Satu Mare city is the administrative centre and in the same time the most important town of the county, with a population of cca. 117 thousand inhabitants. It can be regarded as a border town, with a favourable geographic position, and can be easily accessed from the Hungarian and also from the Ukrainian border. This typical plain country is situated in the Northwestern part of Romania, on the banks of River Someş. Satu Mare is a city with a historic past, it celebrated its millennium in 1972. The city has preserved its long civic traditions that are not only reflected by its old architecture but also by the mentality of the local people. Satu Mare is a typical cross-border, multi-ethnical town: its population is 55% Romanians, 40% Hungarians, and 2,8% Germans.
Satu Mare is also the educational and cultural centre of the county. It has a developed educational network, in addition to the 16 institutions of secondary education and two professional schools there are three institutions offering university level education. All institutions provide foreign language courses, as well as almost all kinds of professional instruction.
